Omie loves complex fiber, fears a sugar tsunami, and is never afraid to deliver a harsh reality check from the inside out. He takes his job of keeping Zara “regular” very seriously.

JAY The reluctant genius. A certified math wiz and studious introvert, Jay usually needs to be physically pried away from his books by Zara and Veer to come outside. He’s the “good kid” voice of reason who calculates the exact odds of Veer’s plans failing, but surprises everyone with a razor-sharp, quiet wit when he finally joins in the fun.

VEER The neighborhood smooth-talker. Veer is sassy, supremely confident, and a bit of a pint-sized hustler. He always has a scheme, a shortcut, or a blunt opinion delivered with charming swagger. He’s the adventurous speed-demon on bikes and skates who pushes Zara out of her comfort zone (and usually right into trouble).

COACH T: The overly intense P.E. teacher. Coach T believes every problem in life can be solved by running another lap around the track. She doesn’t understand “microbiome diversity,” but she definitely understands yelling “HUSTLE!” and blowing his whistle.

Cabbage provides soluble fiber to support regularity and feed beneficial bacteria. The spices (cumin, mustard seeds) aid digestion and reduce bloating. Fresh grated coconut adds creaminess without heaviness. While not fermented like sauerkraut, it’s a perfect companion to your probiotic ferments. Eat it alongside homemade pickles or kefir for a balanced, joyful gut meal. Low FODMAP-friendly if you limit portions.

Ingredients (serves 3–4 as a side):

• 4–5 cups finely shredded cabbage (about 1 small head; green or Savoy for best texture)

• ½–¾ cup grated fresh or frozen coconut (thawed; unsweetened desiccated works in a pinch, but fresh is more authentic and flavorful)

• 1–2 green chilies, finely chopped or slit (adjust for heat; remove seeds for milder)

2. Temper the spices: Heat coconut oil in a wide pan or kadai over medium heat. Add mustard seeds. Let them splutter and pop (about 30 seconds). Add cumin seeds, curry leaves, and dried red chilies (if using). Sauté for 20–30 seconds until fragrant.

3. Stir-fry: Add the cabbage-coconut mixture to the pan. Stir everything to coat in the spiced oil.

4. Cook gently: Cover and cook on medium-low for 5–8 minutes, stirring occasionally. The cabbage steams in its own moisture. No added water needed for that perfect bite. It should stay crisp-tender, not mushy.
