We often think of digestion as something purely physical — what we eat, how our body breaks it down, and what nutrients we absorb. But there’s another kind of digestion that matters just as much: emotional digestion.
The gut holds onto what the mind avoids.
When we suppress emotions — stress, grief, anger, or even joy — they don’t vanish. Instead, they often settle in the body, especially in the gut. That tight knot in your stomach, the sudden loss of appetite, the bloating that seems to appear out of nowhere — these are signs your nervous system might be carrying more than just your last meal.
Unprocessed emotions can disrupt how we digest, how we sleep, how we feel, and how we heal.
Healing, then, isn’t always about fixing. Sometimes, it’s about feeling.
Let yourself feel the sadness. Let the anxiety move through. Let the joy grow without feeling bad about it. When we allow our emotions without judging them, we give ourselves a chance to truly heal.
So the next time your body sends a signal, instead of asking, “How do I make this go away?”, try asking, “What needs to be felt here?”
